I know it’s been a while since I posted fresh material, I guess killing your leisure time is in the fine print for a full time college student. Nevertheless, I have two very special posts for today. This one being the first of a new thread in my catalog that will be dubbed incite (insight). I will try my best to post about general camera techniques and how to bring fotography into your frame of reference.
This week I would like to talk about lighting and fotography. As Saad would always say, “it’s painting with light.” This is completely true. Lighting takes a picture into completely different dimension. Where anything and anywhere becomes a canvas for your work. Literally, you can use anything to begin “painting” light on your composition. Spill light on subjects that you would like to bring attention to or mask objects with shadows.
Here I’m going to show you a picture from a normal get together between me and my good friend Saul.

Here you can see what seems to be an average picture of an ordinary subject and actually rather boring composition. Note that I have shown the placement of the flash in the composition so you can be creative with your placement and really have fun with a foto. With the light in its current position, a few tweaks on the camera and a better angle you can turn a boring picture into a light painted piece.
Heres some examples

The first composition carries two distinct variables that can be interpreted in many ways. Firstly, the light being emitted from the bag adds a creative touch to the composition. To me it almost suggest as if knowledge is seeping from the bag onto the subject and the result of the two is captured on the wall. Like a three stage process. Secondly, the symmetry flows very smooth. The subject in the middle is anchoring the attention while the flash and wall are adding effects on both sides.
The second composition utilizes the same facets as the first but in this composition its two dimensional. The subject and his by product on the wall, something like an alter ego. The way a picture is framed and composed creates the whole tone and feeling to it.
I Hope this INCITES some creativity into all of you and begin looking at images and surroundings different. Leave a comment for a future installment!
